Shots fired in Sarasota, none injured

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota Police Department is investigating gunshots in the area of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Goodrich Ave on Wednesday evening. 

On May 22, around 6:15 p.m. officers were called to the area by a citizen, when gunfire was heard and several rounds were shot into a nearby home. Detectives were called to the scene to investigate but no victims were located. Detectives were told from witnesses that a group of people were on the corner when a red Dodge vehicle drove up.

Sarasota Fire Receives $20,000 grant

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Fire Department is receiving $20,000 to purchase smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher training system that will be used to teach local residents how to safely and effectively use fire extinguishers.  

In addition to enabling firefighters to provide hands-on fire extinguisher training to the public, the funds will also purchase dual-technology smoke detectors. These detectors offer the highest rate of reliability and will be distributed to community members lacking the financial means to purchase this critical life-saving device.

Sarasota mom, man accused of abuse in child's death

SARASOTA, Florida (AP) - A man and woman are being held without bond in a Sarasota jail in connection with death of the woman's 3-year-old daughter.

Authorities say Asia Rosier and Jumar Edwards were arrested Monday on felony child abuse charges following the death of Jewel Howard on April 11.

Enhanced traffic patrols designed to keep roadways safe

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office will use enhanced traffic enforcement over the next few weekends to keep streets safe and take impaired drivers off the road.

Deputies will use “saturation patrols” this weekend and over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to look for traffic offenses, motorists driving without a license, those with warrants and drunk drivers.
