Sarasota cattle grazing visit Dec. 8

Sarasota County Natural Resources will host a cattle grazing site visit at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Jordyn parcel of the Deer Prairie Creek in Venice.  Deer Prairie Creek is part of the county's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program (ESLPP).

The event will cover the purpose and benefits of cattle grazing on county-owned pastures and why it is important for land management and wildfire prevention.

County repairing water main break on Bahia Vista Street

Sarasota, FL -- Sarasota County Utilities is repairing a 10-inch water main break affecting the north side of Bahia Vista Street between Troyer Plaza and McIntosh Road.

Officials estimated that water service was interrupted about two hours while repairs were made around 1:25 p.m. Monday. The service interruption is affecting about 200 customers, including two churches that provide day care services.

Sarasota man charged with murder

SARASOTA, Florida (AP) - A 31-year-old Sarasota man has been arrested in connection with the recent slaying of a father of three.

Charles Hill was charged with first-degree murder Saturday and is being held without bond. Authorities said he shot 49-year-old James Brotherton on Nov. 21. Surveillance video shows the two at an ATM minutes before Hill allegedly shot him.

Fla. man tried to bite deputy after K-9 bites him

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (AP) - A 27-year-old man is behind bars after authorities say he tried to bite a deputy after he was bit by a K-9 dog.

Christopher Wilson was arrested on multiple charges after authorities say he tried to break into the home of a person he was banned from seeing on Thursday. Manatee County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the home and set their dog loose to catch Wilson after he refused to cooperate.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports the dog bit Wilson. Authorities say he tried to bite one deputy and kicked another.

Sarasota Commission offers Randall Reid county administrator job

Sarasota, Florida -- Pending a satisfactory pre-employment background check and physical, the Sarasota County Commission approved hiring Randall Reid as the county administrator, replacing Interim County Administrator Terry Lewis on Dec. 1.

Currently the county manager in Alachua County, Reid will be paid $190,000 a year under terms of the contract.

Reid is expected to begin his new job no later than the end of January 2012. Commission Chair Nora Patterson will sign the contract after the successful completion of the pre-employment background check and physical.

Friday night lights on St. Armands

Sarasota, Florida -- St. Armands Circle Park comes to light and life this Friday evening.

The 33rd Annual Holiday Night of Lights kicks off the holiday season in the shopping district.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a Christmas carol sing-a-long. Then be on the lookout for Santa to arrive in his sleigh. And finally a tree lighting ceremony tops off the night.
