Giant Lego Man washes ashore in Sarasota

Siesta Key, Florida -- Maybe he was coming to visit the newly opened Legoland Florida.

Beachcombers on Sarasota's Siesta Key made a rather unusual find Tuesday morning, after a giant Lego Man washed ashore.

County offers tips to keep children safe on Halloween

Sarasota County -- There are many ways to keep children safe at Halloween, when they may be prone to accidents and injuries. The excitement of children at this time of year sometimes makes them forget to be careful.

Sarasota County Fire Marshal Richard Fulwider offers the following tips for keeping children safe at Halloween:

Sarasota beach water advisory lifted at Turtle Beach

A beach water advisory for Turtle Beach has been lifted. Sarasota County Health Department officials received testing results from samples taken on Friday, Oct. 21 that were at a satisfactory level that meets both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state recreational water standards. Residents and visitors may return to swimming and other water sports at this beach site. The “no swim” beach water advisory signage will be removed. 

County to hold two public meetings for county administrator candidates

County to hold two public meetings for county administrator candidates

Sarasota County Commissioners will hold two public sessions for the community to meet candidates for county administrator on Sunday, Nov. 13, and Monday, Nov. 14. Commissioners will hold public interviews with the candidates from 12:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Following the interviews, commissioners will rank the candidates and decide whether to offer an administrator contract. The first public "Meet and Greet" session will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Venice Community Center, 326 S. Nokomis Ave., Venice.

Each candidate will be given an opportunity to talk about their experience, followed by a 45-minute period for questions from the public. The meeting will be moderated by a representative of The Mercer Group, which is conducting the administrator search for Sarasota County. Candidates and the public then will have about an hour to socialize.

Enrollment for Sarasota Virtual School opens Nov 1

SARASOTA COUNTY - Open enrollment for Sarasota Virtual School will begin Tuesday, Nov. 1, for the second semester of the current school year. The semester starts Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012.

SVS is a district public school which provides a full-time online learning option for students in grades K-12. At the current time, a student must have been enrolled full-time in a Florida public school (traditional, charter or alternative) in the previous year to be eligible for enrollment in SVS.

Sarasota Virtual School is an interactive learning environment created through technology, in which the student and teacher are separated by time, space or both. Students access lessons and assignments and receive assessments via the Internet. Using technology, teachers communicate with students and parents in many different ways. The school meets all Florida public school standards and requirements. Students completing graduation requirements will be awarded a high school diploma.

Sarasota's Putter the Prairie Dog finds new home

Sarasota, Florida -- Known for digging holes and burrowing under ground near Sarasota's municipal golf course, Putter the prairie dog has settled in to his new digs at Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens and the City of Sarasota will partner to host a "homecoming" celebration in Putter's honor on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at the family-owned attraction.

Mayor Suzanne Atwell will offer remarks, and several other community leaders and special guests will take part in Putter's official debut.

"The City of Sarasota is excited to work jointly with Sarasota Jungle Gardens to relocate Putter to a safe, welcoming environment," said Mayor Atwell.
