Sarasota Fire Receives $20,000 grant

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Fire Department is receiving $20,000 to purchase smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher training system that will be used to teach local residents how to safely and effectively use fire extinguishers.  

In addition to enabling firefighters to provide hands-on fire extinguisher training to the public, the funds will also purchase dual-technology smoke detectors. These detectors offer the highest rate of reliability and will be distributed to community members lacking the financial means to purchase this critical life-saving device.

Sarasota mom, man accused of abuse in child's death

SARASOTA, Florida (AP) - A man and woman are being held without bond in a Sarasota jail in connection with death of the woman's 3-year-old daughter.

Authorities say Asia Rosier and Jumar Edwards were arrested Monday on felony child abuse charges following the death of Jewel Howard on April 11.

Enhanced traffic patrols designed to keep roadways safe

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office will use enhanced traffic enforcement over the next few weekends to keep streets safe and take impaired drivers off the road.

Deputies will use “saturation patrols” this weekend and over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to look for traffic offenses, motorists driving without a license, those with warrants and drunk drivers.

Strong storms knock trees onto houses

Storms continue to push south across , Polk, Highlands, Hardee, Desoto and Sarasota counties.

There have been numerous reports of hail stemming from these storms, and 10 News has learned of trees falling on houses in Seffner and in Zephyrhills. There's no word on any injuries at this time.

The Summit is Tuesday May 21, at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th Street. The Newtown Community Health Action Team will have tasting stations.

Sarasota, Florida --People are more likely to choose to eat fresh, healthy foods as part of a healthy lifestyle when the surrounding neighborhood or community is designed to help people make the best choice, the easiest choice. The North Sarasota Food Summit will engage the greater Newtown community in finding creative ways to expand access to healthy foods.

The Food Summit will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th St., Sarasota.

Florida city abuzz: Who among us won Powerball jackpot?

USA- Today --The Florida sun was shining a little bit brighter Sunday on an unidentified person who beat odds of 175 million-to-1 on a Powerball ticket worth $590.5 million, the largest jackpot in the game's history.

The lucky numbers in Saturday night's drawing were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11. A mob of media and the curious amassed Sunday outside the Zephyr Commons Publix supermarket, in the Tampa suburb of Zephyrhills, where the winning ticket was sold.
