Sarasota, Florida-Sarasota takes a road down memory lane and a closer look at the 5 school buildings and 4 additions that helped shape the Sarasota Public School Program from 1954-1960. The exhibit highlights the buildings' design preceding postwar America. The program was initiated by Phillip Hanson Hiss III who was later elected to the Board of Public Instruction, that later became known as the Sarasota County School Board.

4th of July concert with the Gloria Musicae Singers

Sarasota, Florida -- The Gloria Musicae Singers will have a July 4th Concert in Sarasota this year. 

The acclaimed singers will salute Independence Day with a multimedia concert of popular and patriotic tunes celebrating America. The concert will also feature the Florida premier of Alan Gershwin's anthem tribute to the Gettysburg Address. 

There concert will also feature songs by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Stephen Foster, and a tribute to the Andrews Sisters and the Big Band Era.

Relay for Life of Lakewood Ranch

Sarasota, Florida -- Time to saddle up and get ready to steer clear of cancer. 

This year's American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay for Life of Lakewood Ranch will take place at the Y of Lakewood Ranch on May 18-19. 

The theme for this year is "Steering Clear of Cancer," and the relay will have a country western feel to it.

The event will honor survivors as well as their caretakers and the ones that have passed away in a luminaria ceremony. 

There will also be a chili cook-off, costumes and much more. 

Man arrested for assault with assault rifle

Sarasota, Florida -- A man has been arrested for threatening another man with an assault rifle and barricading himself from the cops. 

On Saturday, may 11, Lucas Sterling went to the home of Robert Rodriguez to pay him back the $10 he owed Rodriguez. Sterling gave Rodriguez a $10 bill, expecting money back. 

Instead, Sterling was thrown out of the house and when he knocked on the door again, wanting his change, Rodriguez opened the door and pointed an assault rifle at the victim telling him he would kill him.

Sarasota County homeowners told forget lawn maintenance and go to the beach

Sarasota, Florida-Sarasota County officials ask residents to skip lawn mainetnance this summer by not using fertilizer products containing nitrogen and phospherous. Stormwater washes excess fertilizer into storm drains and out into the bay. Environmentalists say the excess nitrogent and phosphorous can fuel the growth of algae and stop the growth of vegetation altering some plant communities.

Beginning June 1-September 30 no fertilizer using phosphorous or nitrogen can be used on lawns or plants in Sarasota County.

Sarasota to receive $5m to promote rowing

Sarasota to receive $5m to promote rowing

Sarasota, Florida- Senate and House legislators approve $5 million to help promote rowing in Sarasota. The state funding will be used for the Nathan Benderson Rowing Park facility.

Sarasota and Manatee counties are finalizing a bid to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships at the Benderson facility. The Federated International Sports Association is expected to announce the winning location in September.

5 injured when driver ran red light in Sarasota Co.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities in Sarasota County are investigating a crash caused by a driver who ran a red light, injuring three adults and two children.

Authorities say the victims were taken to the hospital Saturday and appear to be in stable condition.
