Memorial day parade heads downtown

Sarasota, Florida -- The City of Sarasota in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee will host the annual Memorial Day parade in downtown Sarasota on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 starting at 10 a.m.  

The event will begin at Main Street and Osprey Avenue and will continue Sarasota’s longstanding history of honoring military personnel. At the conclusion of the parade, a ceremony will be held at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue. 

The ceremony is expected to begin at approximately 11 a.m.

Sarasota Fire Receives $20,000 grant

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Fire Department is receiving $20,000 to purchase smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher training system that will be used to teach local residents how to safely and effectively use fire extinguishers.  

In addition to enabling firefighters to provide hands-on fire extinguisher training to the public, the funds will also purchase dual-technology smoke detectors. These detectors offer the highest rate of reliability and will be distributed to community members lacking the financial means to purchase this critical life-saving device.

Sarasota, Florida -- Mote Marine Laboratory has a new leader. Michael Crosby officially assumed the position of President and CEO this week.

Crosby joined Mote in 2010 as Senior Vice President for Research.

Mote's previous head, Kumar Mahadevan retired, but he will continue to assist the organization that he led for 27 years.

Sarasota County is hosting the event May 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sarasota County Housing Authority's The Courts Apartment complex on the corner of Orange Avenue and 21 Street.

Bay Guardian volunteers plant 3,500 plants at Perico Preserve

Sarasota, Florida  - A group of 49 adult and student Bay Guardian volunteers with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) planted 3,500 Florida native plants at a shoreline area on Perico Preserve Saturday, May 4. The plants were donated by Manatee County Natural Resources and FWC Redfish Hatchery at Port Manatee. Other project partners included Around the Bend Nature Tours and Martha B. King Middle School in Bradenton. King Middle School was honored with an SBEP Blue Dolphin Award in 2012 to acknowledge the school's commitment to supporting local environmental projects.

Mail carriers collect food for Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive!

Carrollwood, Florida - Mail carriers will take part in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Residents can leave non-perishable food item by their mailbox and the letter carrier will pick it up. The food will be donated to food banks to distribute to needy citizens.

Last year, over 70-million pounds of food was donated across the country.

If you cannot leave food items by your mailbox, you can drop it by your local post office.
