4-H youth bring holiday joy to homeless families

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota's 4-H youth bring holiday joy to families at the Salvation Army in the Transitional Housing Faith Program. Seven families participated in the Family Fun Night held on Dec. 10.

Now in their eighth year, the Family Fun Nights are held two or three times a year in partnership with the Salvation Army. The 4-H members, volunteers and staff will next host a Family Fun Night on Feb. 4 in advance of Valentine's Day. Another one will be held in spring 2013.

Elementary students donate ‘Shoe Boxes for Seniors’

Sarasota, Florida -- The student council at Gulf Gate Elementary recently contributed 79 shoeboxes filled with gifts to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Shoe Boxes for Seniors project.

The school says the boxes, which will be distributed to needy seniors in nursing homes, are filled with soap, combes, brushes, nail clippers and other health and beauty items, bedroom slippers, magazines and more.

County launches citizen feedback wiki on draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Sarasota County, Florida -- The County is asking for the public's input and comments on its draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan on the county's wiki site.

This citizen feedback tool gives citizens the opportunity to provide input on the topics presented in the plan. The wiki is open for review and comment now; it will close at the end of January 2013.

Sarasota, Florida - The "I Love Sarasota Bay" photo contest had local shutter bugs clicking away and nine residents were honored for their work at the recent Sarasota Bay Water Festival.

First place ribbons in the three age division were awarded to Mary Lou Johnson of Longboat Key, Victoria Holcomb of Sarasota and Makeala Frankford of Sarasota.

Chick-fil-A, Children's Cancer Center collect "Fuel for Families"

Tampa, FL-- There are 38 Chick-fil-A restaurants in the Bay area, and each and every one of them are working alongside the Children's Cancer Center to provide "Fuel for Families" this November.

The “Fuel for Families” challenge will collect grocery and gas gift cards for families who struggle financially to get their children to critical medical visits, and to provide them with healthy meals while undergoing treatment, explains a release about the initiative.

Reminder!! Postal Service to collect toys at mailboxes December 1

Tampa, FL-- It seems early to start thinking of the holidays, but the Suncoast District of the U.S. Postal Service wants to inform its customers of their upcoming toy drive. 

10 News told you all about it earlier this month, but we want to make sure you give yourselves enough time to get out there and pick up a toy to donate.

The collection will take place on December 1, exactly two weeks from today!  The Postal Service will pick up the toys from customers who are able to leave them by their mailboxes, or in bins at the nearest post office.
