Sarasota, Florida -- A deputy caught two young women breaking into a car near Gulf Gate Estates Tuesday morning.

The sheriff's office says the deputy on routine patrol spotted Casey Kane and Morgan Mento committing the crime on Mall Drive around 2:40 a.m. Once spotted, the women quickly crouched behind a Dodge Neon and then took off running in opposite directions.

Kane was caught after a short foot pursuit and Mento was stopped in her car a short time later.

Deputies say the two admitted to going to the apartment community to check for unlocked vehicles to take whatever they could find. They both have a history of burglary and dealing in stolen property.

Deputies recovered a black Dell laptop computer, two Florida driver's licenses and an 18-pack of beer in their possession.

Kane, 20, has been charged with Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance and Possession of Alcohol by a person under 21. Metro, 20, has been charged with Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance.

Residents are urged to protect their property by always locking their vehicle's doors and removing any valuable items.
