Crime

Sarasota, Florida -- Deputies got a break in an investigation into a string of car burglaries in Sarasota after the culprit was spotted using a stolen credit card at an area Walmart store.

Sarasota County deputies have been investigating nine vehicle burglaries in the area primarily west of I-75 in an area bordered by Sawyer, Bee Ridge and Proctor roads since Dec. 23.

When deputies spotted 25-year-old David Lewis using a credit card stolen in one of the burglaries on a Walmart surveillance video they thought they might have their man.

When they showed up to his house on Jarvis Road looking for him, they hit the jackpot when Lewis's father showed them items his son had recently brought home. The items recovered included two GPS units, a laptop computer, camera, cell phone, iPod and prepaid credit card -- all identified as stolen from recent burglaries.

Lewis was arrested and charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, larceny and nine counts of burglary. He is currently being held on $46,120 bond.

Police say all nine vehicles were unlocked at the time of the burglaries.
