County sponsors hurricane session for businesses

Sarasota, Florida - No one likes to think about it, but hurricanes are a reality in Florida.

Beach and other business owners can find out how to prepare during a special symposium this month. Emergency managers from both Sarasota and Charlotte counties will present information.

The symposium takes place Thursday, May 16th at the Englewood Chamber Community Room from 5 to 7 p.m.

Sarasota County libraries are offering "Free Comic Book Day". Starting at 10 a.m., every child who visits a county library that day can choose a free comic book while supplies last.

Sarasota, Florida -- Financial experts from the worlds of banking, investments, nonprofit agencies and retirement planning will offer free advice at libraries around Sarasota County during "Money Smart Week @ Your Library," April 19 through April 27. 

Among the topics are budgeting; investing wisely; navigating the Medicare system; setting up wills, trusts and estates; dealing with landlord/tenant issues; and preventing identity theft. Scheduled presentations include:

New noise ordinance

Sarasota, Florida -- The city of Sarasota has a new sound regulation dealing with unreasonable sound coming from motor vehicles. 

The ordinance took effect on April 1. Elements of the ordinance such as "plainly audible" sound and specific times of the day and night help law enforcement determine a violation. 

The ordinance states that unreasonable sound produced from within or upon motor vehicles heard plainly audible at a distance of fifty feet or more from the source of the sound.

Sarasota, Florida -- A drop in temperature to the low 30s after midnight has Sarasota County Emergency Management officials reminding residents to be prepared. 

"Temperatures are projected to drop rapidly on Wednesday," said Ed McCrane, Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief. "Depending on this afternoon's forecast, the National Weather Service may issue a wind chill advisory. It is important that the community prepare for colder than usual conditions by taking precautions to protect their homes, families and pets."
