Commission approves projects to help water quality

 Sarasota, Florida - The Sarasota County Commission has awarded construction contracts totaling $5.9 million for improvements to Beach Road drainage and Hudson Bayou water quality.

According to the county, the Beach Road project is designed to protect public health and safety by improving water quality at Siesta Beach. Plans call for improving the stormwater treatment system. The project includes the construction of a new one-acre detention pond. That project should be completed in November.

Bradenton, Florida -- The 18th annual Jewels on the Bay Designer Showhouse is currently underway featuring two homes located on a protected bayfront inlet on Lido Key, just steps away from St. Armand's Circle.

The two homes at 361 and 439 Boulevard of the Presidents are two very different architectural styles, Mediterranean Revival and Prairie-School. They are open to the public for tours now until Sunday, Feb. 17. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Gulf Gate Library gets ready for move to Westfield Square Mall

Sarasota, Florida -- The Gulf Gate Library will close its doors at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, in anticipation of reopening in the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall, next to J.C. Penney.

The County says the mall location is expected to open on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and will serve as the library's temporary home while a new Gulf Gate Library is built at the Curtiss Avenue site. The new Gulf Gate Library is anticipated to open in 2014.

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota's Office of Housing and Community Development has announced it recently received the National Community Development Association's Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award.

The Housing Office was recognized for its use of Community Development Block Grant funds in the Newtown neighborhood to improve neighborhoods, homes and families' quality of life.

The grants helped the city invest $60.6 million in public money to improve the following 12 projects in the Newtown community:

Sarasota, Florida -- Nov. 30 is the last day to pay property taxes with a 4% discount and that day, along with the day after the Thanksgiving holiday, usually brings in quite a crowd at the Sarasota County Tax Collector's Office.

In order to make it easier for taxpayers on Monday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 30, drive-thru service will be available from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the following Tax Collector Service Centers:

Gulf Gate Library moves to Westfield Sarasota Square Mall

Gulf Gate Library moves to Westfield Sarasota Square Mall

Sarasota, Florida -- Patrons of Gulf Gate Library won't be traveling very far for services while a new library is built. A temporary location has been secured at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall.

The County Commission approved a lease agreement on a 20,000-square-foot space at the southernmost end of the mall, adjacent to JCPenny.

The existing Gulf Gate Library is expected to close in December and the new temporary location is projected to open in January 2013.
