Sarasota County School Opens Achieva Credit Union Branch

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota students receive real life banking experience while running a branch office of the Achieva Credit Union at school. The new branch opened at the Sarasota County Technical Institute in Sarasota.

This is the fourth branch Achieva has opened in Sarasota County and the first one on a technical school campus.

The SCTI branch is opened to the public. Students can intern at the branch to gain real-world experience learning business practices, marketing and finance skills.

Sarasota, Florida- Thinking about hiring a contractor? Then you will want to turn to a new website set up by Sarasota County that shares information on unlicensed contractors who have been cited for unlicensed activity.

The centralized database will be open to other government jurisdictions such as cities, towns and other counties that want to participate.

Descendants of Sarasota firefighters are eligible for scholarships

Sarasota, Florida -- Direct descendants of City of Sarasota firefighters are now eligible for a scholarship to attend State College of Florida thanks to the generosity of a Florida-based law firm.  The $25,000 scholarship is funded by Sugarman & Susskind, P.A. in Miami which provides legal counsel for the City of Sarasota Firefighters' Pension Fund.

Sarasota, Florida -- Financial experts from the worlds of banking, investments, nonprofit agencies and retirement planning will offer free advice at libraries around Sarasota County during "Money Smart Week @ Your Library," April 19 through April 27. 

Among the topics are budgeting; investing wisely; navigating the Medicare system; setting up wills, trusts and estates; dealing with landlord/tenant issues; and preventing identity theft. Scheduled presentations include:

North Port, Florida -- Delinquent tax penalties start in April and the Sarasota Tax Collector has some advice to avoid them. 

To avoid a penalty, property tax payments must be made soon. So far, 91.45 percent of the tax roll has been collected, totaling more than $622 million.

"There are many ways to pay your taxes and avoid a penalty," Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates noted.

SNAP dollars double at market

Clearwater, Florida -- People who have SNAP dollars will see their money double at the Clearwater Gateway Farmers Market. 

Starting March 23, the Clearwater Gateway Farmers Market will begin offering "Market Double Dollars" which will increase Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dollars.

At the market, $10 in SNAP dollars will buy $20 of eligible foods at vendor booths that accept SNAP and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT). Eligible foods include fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy, meat, seeds and plants that grow fruit.
