Students act in Human Wax Museum

Sarasota, Florida -- The cafeteria at Gocio Elementary School will be transformed into a Human Wax Museum from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25.

Fifth-grade students will stand in a frozen-statue pose, dressed as the characters they studied for their class biography projects. 

When visitors to the museum drop change into bowls, the student "statues" will come alive and share biographical information about their characters. 

Proceeds from the project will be donated to All Faiths Food Bank.

New College Student Awarded Truman Scholarship

Sarasota, Florida- New College student Michael Long, 21, is awarded the prestigious 2013 Truman Scholarship given to students with a future in public service. Long is one of 62 winners nationwide and the only student to win the award in Florida.

Long was the youngest person elected to chair the Florida Student Association and the youngest to serve on the Florida Board of Governors.  During his first two years, he served as co-president of the New College student government. In 2011 Long stood up against Senator JD Alexander over Fl Polytechnic.

Embracing our Differences exhibit

Bradenton, Florida -- The inspirational creativity of Manatee District students will be on display during the "Embracing Our Differences" outdoor art exhibit.

The exhibit opens March 31 and remains open until April 29. It will be held in the Anthony T. Rossi Waterfront Park in downtown Bradenton from March 31 to April 29; Sarasota Bayfront Park from March 31 to June 2; and North Port High School from May 1 to June 2.

Sarasota schools participate in Odyssey of the Mind

Sarasota, Florida -- Teams from four Sarasota County public elementary schools will participate in the Odyssey of the Mind State Finals. 

The event will take place on Saturday, April 6. The four schools that are headed to the competition are Bay Haven School of Basics Plus, Brentwood, Lakeview, and Tatum Ridge. These teams have competed successfully at the Odyssey of the Mind Sun Region competition March. 

Depending on the performance of the teams, some may compete in the World Finals at Michigan State University in May.

Sarasota's Teacher of The Year; Marine Science Teacher

Sarasota, Florida -- Riverview High School's Marine Science teacher Katrin Rudge is named Teacher of the Year for Sarasota County. 

Katrin Rudge is a marine science teacher and director of the Auqascience Program at Riverview. Rudge's program incorporates science and astronomy. She has taught nearly 12 years in Sarasota County.

Sarasota, Florida -- Superintendent Lori White will announce the overall Sarasota County Teacher of the Year on Thursday, March 21. 

It will take place during the annual awards program honoring candidates from schools throughout the county. 

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 1000 Blvd. of the Arts, Sarasota. The announcement of the district Teacher of the Year will be sometime after 6 p.m.

Sarasota County, Florida -- When the Baltimore Orioles take on the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday at Ed Smith Stadium on March 14, more than 150 local children will be in the stands after earning a free ticket to the game by participating in the Sarasota County Libraries Big League Reader program.
