Two Sarasota County charter schools named ‘high-performing’ by state

SARASOTA COUNTY – Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences and the Student Leadership Academy have been named high-performing charter schools by the Florida Department of Education.

Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1997, has a current enrollment of 738 students in grades six-eight. The Student Leadership Academy, opened in 2004, has 317 students in grades six-eight.

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools created outside the traditional public school system through an agreement between the school and the local school board or a state university. State legislation enacted earlier this year created the designation of high-performing charter school, which must have received at least two school grades of A and no school grade below B for the last three years.

Sarasota's Riverview High School to receive historical marker Oct. 4

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Historical Commission will recognize Riverview High School with the dedication of a new historical marker at the school at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Riverview High School is located at 1 Ram Way, on the southwest corner of Proctor Road and Lords Avenue, in Sarasota.

The marker will recognize the historical significance of the original Riverview High School, which opened in 1958 and was designed by noted architect Paul Rudolph.

Suncoast Polytechnic honored with biomedical certification

Sarasota, Florida- Suncoast Polytechnical High School is now a Project Lead The Way Biomedical Sciences Certified School - the first and only high school in the state of Florida to earn the certification.

"We are excited to be part of this exciting program," said SPHS Principal Jennifer Putnam. "We look forward to working with Project Lead The Way to continue to develop the opportunities this program offers to students."

Putnam and a team of teachers, staff, students and members of the community conducted a self-assessment of the school's biomedical sciences program, culminating in a site visit by a national PLTW certification specialist. The certification team met with teachers, administration, counselors, students and community representatives and reviewed student work.

28 Sarasota County seniors named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists

Sarasota, Florida - More than two dozen Sarasota County seniors are named semifinalists as National Merit Scholars.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists, including 28 seniors from Sarasota County public high schools, in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 8,300 National Merit Scholarships valued at more than $34 million.

New College of Florida named #6 Best Public Liberal Arts College in nation

Sarasota, Florida -- U.S. News & World Report ranked New College of Florida the no. 6 public college in their annual rankings of the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges released this week. New College also ranked in the top tier of all National Liberal Arts Colleges, public and private, coming in at no. 94, up five spots from last year.

The 2012 ranking marks the seventh consecutive year New College has been ranked one of the nation's top 100 liberal arts colleges overall by U.S. News & World Report. It also marks the seventh year in a row New College has been ranked in the top six among public colleges, with military academies in the top four spots this year. New College is the only liberal arts college in Florida to be listed in the nation's top 100.

Last month, New College of Florida landed the no. 16 spot on Forbes' "Top 100 Best Buy Colleges for 2011" and was featured as one of the country's best colleges for the 10th consecutive year in The Princeton Review's Best 376 Colleges: 2012 Edition.

Sarasota's New College ranked 8th Most Free-Spirited

Sarasota, Florida-Newsweek ranks New College of Florida the eighth most Free-Spirited college in "The Best Colleges for You," the magazine's annual rankings guide in the Sept. 5, 2011, issue and online.

Newsweek compiled the list of Free-Spirited colleges based on how much students can design their own majors, the use of written evaluations over letter grades and a student's personal learning experience as measured by the total enrollment and student to faculty ratio.

New College of Florida's student/faculty ratio of 10 to 1 fosters a personal learning environment that allows students to work collaboratively with faculty mentors on coursework, research and independent study projects.

Sarasota's New College and Water Atlas Team Up

Sarasota, Florida-As part of the upcoming 2012 Sarasota Bay Watershed Symposium, to be held at New College of Florida February 15-17, New College is boosting the utility and performance of the Sarasota Water Atlas (Sarasota.WaterAtlas.org) to help better integrate coastal watershed science, policy and education for Sarasota Bay. 

The Sarasota Water Atlas was developed by the University of South Florida to provide an online, accessible and comprehensive resource to help scientists, policymakers, educators and interested citizens alike make informed decisions about our vital water resources.

The Atlas is a real-time, up-to-date, partner-funded resource, covering watersheds along the Gulf Coast from St. Joseph Sound to Estero Bay. Sarasota County Government has long recognized the importance of this resource to its environmental mission and is a core partner.
